Dark League Studios continue to charge forward for the growth of esports.
After a successful inaugural season of the Estudyante Esports: National Championships, there is simply no signs of slowing down for DLS as it now looks forward to a bigger and better Season 2.
The National Championships have attracted over 600 varsity teams from over 200 schools nationwide in its first year with the champions and runners-up receiving the prizes on Sunday, May 27, at the Dark League Studios headquarters in Pasig City.
Novus Bravehearts from Faith Colleges finally claimed their P250,000 top prize for reigning supreme in the MLBB tournament while grand finals MVP Zywin Angelo Pedutem received an extra P20,000 for the plum.
Tekken champion Jean Cyrus Villapana of City College of Angeles also claimed his P50,000 prize while the kings in the League of Legends tournament, OLFU Phoenix from Our Lady of Fatima University, likewise, accepted the P250,000 prize with finals MVP Michael Jay Gawala receiving an additional 20,000 for bagging the award.
Similarly, the DLSU Green Aces from De La Salle University received the P250,000 after ruling the Valorant tournament with Xavier Juan claiming the P20,000 additional prize for bagging the MVP award.
The respective runner up finishers also claimed P100,000 while the schools of the winning teams are also receiving an additional P80,000 for the champion and P50,000 for the second placers.
Continuing the initiative of DLS chairman Bobby Rosales to bridge the gap between esports and the academe, Alexander “Deng” Kibanoff, the program director of Estudyante Esports, said the National Championships is riding the momentum of the successful inaugural year to welcome more schools and student-esports athletes for the next season.
“It actually was the brainchild of our chairman. So, isa lang yun sa isang idea na magkaroon tayo ng isang championships na talagang there's an equal opportunity for all colleges and universities to join,” said Kibanoff as DLS is expecting the registrations for the second season to balloon to over 1000 teams once it opens around July.
“Ang gusto ni Sir Bobby non is really a competition that is inclusive. So, walang mapipigilan na sumali as long as you're really interested in esports and you are acknowledged as a varsity of your school,” he added.
For DLS co-founder and CEO AC Valdenor, making sure that the Estudyante Esports continues what it has started is crucial especially in defeating the toxic stigma around competitive gaming.
“What we wanted to make sure of is that we remove that kind of toxic stigma. Esports is supposed to be fun. It's supposed to create aspiration for us, for the younger generation, and it's supposed to be an eye-opener as part of the digital age. But it's not ready to become a career. So we have to sustain it,” he stressed.
