Aaron Jude Bado was the first to yield after absorbing a unanimous 5-0 loss to Uzbekistan’s Dusmatov Faryozbek in their opening bout in the men’s bantamweight (55kg) division. All five judges from Algeria, Morocco, Poland, Zimbabwe and Ukraine scored 30-27 for the Uzbek fighter, asserting his dominance over his Filipino opponent.
In contrast, Jay Bryan Baricuatro came close to booking a quarterfinals seat in the men’s fly (50kg) class, but ended up bowing to another Uzbek in Melikuziev Shodiyorjon in a split 3-2 decision.
Judges from Singapore and Ireland gave Baricuatro 30-27 and 29-28 scores, respectively, but Shodiyorjon earned three judges’ nods with identical and tight 29-28 scores.
Ofelia Magno, who fought in the penultimate bout in the evening, also fumbled in her first match against Kazakhstan’s Gulnaz Buribayeva, absorbing a unanimous 5-0 defeat in the women’s light fly (48kg). Judges from Ireland, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Algeria gave the Kazakh similar 30-27 scores, while the judge from Serbia scored 29-28 also for Buribayeva.
Meanwhile, three Filipinos are battling in their respective quarterfinal bouts at press time.
John Paul Napoles is dueling with Uzbekistan’s Daniyarov Madiyar in the men’s light (60kg),
Ronald Chavez Jr. is clashing with Kazakhstan’s Torekhan Sabyrkhan in the quarterfinals of the men’s light middle (70kg), and Riza Pasuit is facing Ukraine’s Marianna Basanets in the women’s light (60kg).
