According to a social media post, robbers allegedly attacked the Greenhills Mall branch of Lugang Café on May 23, during which a female customer was reportedly stabbed by one of the suspects after refusing to hand over her phone.
The post also linked the robbery to another incident that occurred at a high-end Japanese restaurant on Arnaiz Avenue in Makati City on May 5.
In a statement, Lugang Café refuted the claims, stating that no such incident occurred in any of its branches and dismissing the social media post as fake news.
"We are aware of a text message currently circulating about an alleged robbery at our Lugang Café O'Square Greenhills branch. We would like to assure everyone that this information is FALSE. No such incident has occurred in any of our stores. The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our top priority. Thank you for your continued support and trust," The café's management said.
PNP to file charges
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it will file charges against those responsible for spreading fake news on social media.
"Following the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to uphold public order and combat the spread of disinformation, the PNP immediately validated circulating reports of an alleged robbery at Lugang Café in Greenhills, San Juan City—which has now been confirmed to be entirely false and misleading," PNP Public Information Office (PIO) chief Col. Randulf Tuaño said.
"On May 23, 2025, personnel from the San Juan City Police Station (SJCPS) Substation 1, in coordination with Ortigas Security and Barangay Greenhills, conducted a physical inspection at around 2:30 p.m. in response to the circulating online claim. The management of Lugang Café categorically denied that any such incident occurred and labeled the information as fake news and malicious reporting. By 9:00 p.m. of the same day, Lugang Café released an official statement via their verified Facebook page, affirming that no robbery took place and urging the public not to spread unverified information," he said.
"In response, the PNP will file appropriate charges against those responsible for initiating and spreading the false claim. The Joint Anti-Fake News Action Committee (JAFNAC) is conducting a thorough investigation to trace the origin of the disinformation." The official noted.
Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, PNP chief, also reminded the public to be responsible in using social media.
“We urge everyone to be responsible in the use of social media. Spreading unverified and false information not only causes public alarm but also undermines the trust in our law enforcement and community institutions. The PNP will not hesitate to file appropriate charges and ensure that those who deliberately spread fake news will be held accountable under the law," Marbil said.
