Remulla: PBBM has already picked the next PNP chief

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor ‘Jonvic’ Remulla confirmed on Monday, May 26, that President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. has already chosen the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

However, Remulla remained mum on the identity of the next chief PNP, stressing that the President will come up with the announcement.

When pressed further by reporters for any hint, Remulla simply responded “police siya’’ drawing laughter from the onlookers at Camp Karingal.

“Meron na siyang napili (He has already picked one). Excellent, very qualified, very dynamic, good track record,” Remulla said.

In a press briefing, Remulla favored the next chief PNP to have a longer term in office to carry out the continuing vision in the police force.

“Ang nangyayari kasi sa atin, a tenure of a chief PNP will only last one year, a little more than one year. Kailangan natin merong continuing vision na may buy-in ng lahat ng PNP as the years go by (What occurs is the tenure of a chief PNP will only last one year or a little more than a year. We need to have a continuing vision that has a buy-in from all the PNP as the years go by),’’ Remulla explained.

Currently, Remulla confided that the directive, vision and mission statement vary, stressing that there should be a common goal “no matter the chief PNP is.’’

The term of PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil was extended and is set to expire on June 7 as the President opted to extend his service last February.

Currently the compulsory retirement age of police officers is 56 with Remulla preferring it to be at 60.

Reports disclosed that Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., the deputy chief for administration of the PNP; Lt. Gen. Robert Rodriguez, the deputy chief for operations of the PNP; Lt Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, the chief of the directorial staff of the PNP; Major Gen. Nicolas Torre III, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group; and Major Gen. Anthony Aberin, chief of National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) are among the top contenders for the PNP chief post.
