Busy sked for PH spikers

Alas Pilipinas are looking at a busy schedule with overseas stints for their men’s, women’s and U16 squads in the coming months.

The Alas Men are seeing action in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Men’s Nations Cup in Manama, Bahrain from June 17 to 24 -- a tournament that they will be using as a springboard for their preparations for the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship that the country is hosting in September.

The PH male spikers are drawn in Pool C with Pakistan and Chinese Taipei.

Pool A has host Bahrain, Indonesia and Thailand; Pool B is composed of Qatar, Australia and Kazakhstan; and Pool D is composed of South Korea, Vietnam and New Zealand.

The AVC Men’s Nations Cup will be held after the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) holds the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals from June 10 to 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Alas Women are also expected to have their hands full when they compete in the AVC Women’s Nations Cup in Hanoi, Vietnam on June 7 to 14.

The PH female spikers are drawn with Kazakhstan, Iran, Indonesia, Mongolia and New Zealand in the 11-team field that also has host Vietnam, Australia, India, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong in the other bracket.

The younger Alas Women, for their parts, will compete in the AVC Women’s Under-16 Championship on July 20 to 27 in Amman, Jordan, where they are bracketed in Pool B with Japan, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Pool A has Jordan, Lebanon, Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, Pool C has China, Qatar, South Korea and Kazakhstan and Pool D is made up of Chinese-Taipei, Thailand, Australia and India.

Also drawn were the groupings for the AVC Men’s Under-16 Championship in Nakhon Pathom in Thailand from July 12 to 19, though the PH is not fielding a team there.

The draw for all tournaments were held during the AVC Board of Administration Meeting which AVC and PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara hosted last Sunday, May 25, at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel.

“It was a remarkable draw for the AVC’s competitions, and we’re incredibly happy to announce that volleyball is very much alive in Asia,” Suzara said. “We’re aiming for excellent quality of the competitions.”
