7 workers victimized by fake job offer rescued

BACOLOD CITY – A call for help on social media led to the rescue and safe return of seven residents of Negros Occidental victimized and stranded for two months by a fake job offer in Palawan.

Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya responded swiftly after learning about the group’s plight online.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, May 25, Gasataya shared that four of them were from Barangay Mansilingan in this city, two from Murcia town, and one from Binalbagan town.
One of the workers, in a radio interview, revealed that they traveled to Palawan last March after being recruited for construction jobs.
However, upon arrival, they met a reality far different from what was promised.
Poor working conditions and lack of proper wages left them unable to send money home.
Upon learning their situation, Gasataya coordinated efforts to bring them back.
The group arrived at the Bredco port here on Monday afternoon, May 26, after leaving Palawan via Iloilo on Sunday.
Gasataya thanked those who raised awareness and offered help.
“They carried not only the weight of distance, but also the burden of being far from loved ones – enduring hardship in silence and holding on to hope when everything seemed uncertain,” he said.
The four Bacolod residents were welcomed by Barangay Mansilingan Capt. France Tionko.
