Fresh from her successful campaign for a party-list House seat in the recent midterm elections, former Senator Leila de Lima has once again stepped into the national discourse as an advocate of dignity in the digital age. Taking the cudgels for actress Nadine Lustre, de Lima has called attention to Republic Act 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act. This law was enacted on April 17, 2019, supplementing the existing Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995, to ensure and enhance protection of individuals from gender-based online harassment and other forms of abuse, whether on the street, at work, in schools, or, increasingly, on social media platforms.

Lustre became the target of online hate after she shared a post perceived by some as critical of former president Rodrigo Duterte, following news of his arrest and detention at The Hague in March. The backlash she received was immediate and vitriolic, reminding us all how fragile public discourse has become—and how necessary it is to protect not just the right to speak, but the right to speak safely.

De Lima’s support of Lustre is anchored on two urgent imperatives: first, the need to protect individuals from online abuse, and second, the importance of upholding the principle of freedom of expression. “This is a necessary step,” she said, “in a time when social media is being used to silence voices that speak for justice and reform.”

These are not abstract principles. The ability to freely express one’s beliefs—even unpopular ones—is enshrined in our Constitution and forms the bedrock of any democratic society. But what happens when freedom of expression is punished not by the state, but by the mob? When voices—especially those of women—are drowned out by waves of hate? When individuals are harassed simply for standing by their convictions?

The Safe Spaces Act is critical because it affirms that expression should not come at the cost of safety. In a time when online spaces are extensions of our communities and public squares, the same standards of civility and respect must apply. Harassment, threats, and dehumanizing comments are not mere byproducts of digital life—they are forms of violence that can inflict deep psychological wounds and chill public participation.

The implications go beyond politics. At its core, the issue touches on a person’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. How can one live freely if their every word invites attack? How can one pursue happiness when their presence online becomes a source of distress? In effect, when freedom of expression is curtailed by hate, it undermines our collective dignity.

By standing up for Lustre, De Lima underscores that this is not just about celebrity or politics. It is about every citizen’s right to express themselves without fear. It is a call to defend the digital commons from becoming toxic battlegrounds where only the loudest and most aggressive prevail.

Let us not forget: silence can be a form of violence too—especially when it comes from a society that looks away while voices are silenced, one post at a time.
