LAOAG CITY – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is hopeful that the country would produce more world-class athletes from the grassroots as he officially opened the 2025 Palarong Pambansa on Saturday evening, May 24, at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium (FEMMS) here.
Speaking before the delegates from all over the country, Marcos stressed the relevance of their participation in this multisport grassroots tournament to the Filipino youth.
“Malay natin, dito sa mga kasama natin na ito meron dyan na lilitaw na Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, o Alex Eala,” Marcos said.
“Alam namin na kayong lahat ay ninanais nyong magkaroon ng medal, ngunit tandaan ninyo lahat kayo ay kinikilala na kampyeon. Kayo ang pinakamagaling sa inyong paaralan, probinsya, at rehiyon. Magandang halimbawa kayo sa kabataang Pilipino, na may pangarap sa buhay at dedikasyon para matupad ito,” he added.
Marcos traveled back to his provincial roots with hopes of inspiring elementary and secondary student-athletes competing in this weeklong sportsfest that has produced several national team members.
“Ngayon ay nasa Palarong Pambansa kayo [at] sa susunod kayo na ang kinatawan ng Pilipinas sa Asian Games at tyaka sa Olympics, kaya paghusayan ninyo,” Marcon said.
“Tandaan ninyo, ang taong lumalaban hindi natatalo, losers are those who failed to try, winners are those who try and maybe they fail but then they try again, and do not stop trying until they win and succeed,” he added.
Other officials also graced the opening ceremony that include Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard Bachmann and Department of Education secretary Sonny Angara.
Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, the country’s first Olympic gold medalist, led the oath-taking of the coaches and technical officials, while Gerick John Flores, a member of the national team who had the most stolen bases in the 11th BFA U12 Asian Baseball Championship, presided over the athletes' swearing-in.
Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc, meanwhile, echoed the sentiment of Marcos and stressed that one the missions in this year’s hosting of the Palaro to honor its very own Two-time Olympic bronze medalist swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso, the official logo and inspiration for mascot, Filo.
“Through this Palaro, may Teofilo Yldefonso be commemorated and celebrated and may our next generation continue his legacy of heroism and nationalism,” said Manotoc.
“For this Palaro, we emphasized two things: Firstly, being athlete-centered, the games after all for student-athletes we want to ensure their comfort and convenience all throughout the games; secondly, being a sustainable games as the renewable capital of the Philippines, we want to ensure that our are ecologically sound,” he added.
The ceremony was highlighted by cultural presentations followed by a parade of athletes and coaches from 18 regions and two special delegations.
