A police officer was stabbed and seriously wounded by a knife-wielding man he was trying to stop from running amok in Barangay San Antonio, Parañaque City on Friday, May 23.
Staff Sgt. Carlo Sotelo Navarro,45, assigned to the Parañaque City Police BF Homes Substation, suffered severe head and chest injuries. He was rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
According to the police report, the incident occurred at around 10:45 a.m. along Creek Drive I.
The suspect, identified as alias “Arnold,” a resident of Creek Drive II, had been acting aggressively, prompting concerned residents to call the authorities.
Navarro, along with other police officers and Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPATs) members, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they attempted to calm Arnold, but he became increasingly hostile.
Fearing that the suspect might take a bystander hostage, Navarro, immediately intervened, risking his life to subdue the suspect.
However, Arnold, who was armed with a kitchen knife, stabbed Navarro in the head and chest, inflicting serious injuries. His fellow officers managed to restrain and arrest the suspect.
The Investigation Detective and Management Section found out that Arnold was a drug user and had previous involvement in cases of alarms and scandals, and illegal gambling.
Following his arrest, the suspect was detained at the Parañaque City Police custodial facility and charged with direct assault, alarms and scandals, illegal possession of a bladed weapon, and frustrated murder.
