Citing his decisive leadership and dedication to improving the country’s education system in a short span of time, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) on Saturday, May 24, called on President Marcos to reinstate former senator Sonny Angara as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

In a statement, CEAP expressed hope that the President “would find merit in the accomplishments” of Angara and “reinstate” him as Secretary of Education.
This call follows Marcos’s directive for a Cabinet-wide courtesy resignation on May 22. Angara, on the same day, tendered his resignation in response to the President’s order.
Support for Angara
CEAP commended Secretary Angara for swiftly addressing pressing issues in the Philippine education sector, highlighting his openness to dialogue and his deep understanding of the challenges faced by educators and students alike.
Angara, CEAP said, has “effectively addressed numerous challenges facing the Philippine education system” in a “remarkably” short period.
“Under his leadership, we have witnessed a leader who truly listens and has much to contribute to our government's efforts,” CEAP said.
Urging stability in DepEd
CEAP underscored the importance of continuity and stability in the Department of Education—especially during a period marked by educational recovery and reform.
According to CEAP, insulating the education sector from political turbulence is critical to ensuring long-term success and progress.
“There is an urgent need for stability within the Department of Education, especially in these challenging times,” CEAP said.
CEAP noted that education forms the “bedrock of democracy, nurturing responsible and informed citizens”—and therefore, it is “crucial that the education sector remains insulated from political influences.”
With more than 1,525 member schools and over 120 superintendents of Catholic schools, CEAP is considered the largest network of Catholic schools in the country, advocating for quality and inclusive education rooted in Christian values.
The national association of Catholic schools plays a key role in shaping national educational policies and reforms.
