BACOLOD CITY – The province of Negros Occidental suffered losses in agriculture amounting to P1.8 million from the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

A report from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist submitted to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson on Monday, May 19, said high-value commercial crops incurred P1.7 million in losses, followed by rice with P128,000 as of May 16.

Valladolid town was the hardest hit, affecting Barangays Tabao Proper, Bagumbayan, Sagua Banua, and Bayabas.
Sixty-six farmers tilling 9.59 hectares of land planted to high-value crops suffered losses.
Barangays Sag-ang and Camandag in La Castellana town were also greatly affected, affecting nine rice farmers with 3.98 hectares of land.
Kanlaon erupted on May 13, a day after the midterm elections, causing ashfall in some parts of the province.
Thousands of residents displaced by the series of volcanic seismic activities since the June 3, 2024 eruption are currently staying in evacuation centers.
