Andrew Tan's buying spree nears Emperador's PSEi exit threshold
Tycoon Dr. Andrew Tan has so far invested ₱1.33 billion as he continues to mop up shares of Emperador Inc., which faces removal from the Philippine Stock Exchange’s benchmark index if the public float falls below 20 percent.
Emperador disclosed to the Philippine Stock Exchange that Tan’s privately-held The Andresons Group has bought another ₱333 million worth of the shares of Emperador from the market on May 22, 2025. The company has been purchasing 25 million Emperador shares at an average price of ₱13.32 per share daily since Monday, May 19.
The 25 million share increments are equivalent to 0.16 percent of Emperador’s outstanding capital stock and Tan’s four-day buying spree now amounts to 0.64 percent of Emperador and brings down its public float to just 20.48 percent from 20.12 percent last week, based on calculations of Abacus Securities Corporation.
If Tan continues to buy more Emperador shares, taking out 145 million more Emperador shares from the market will pull down its public float to 19.998 percent and disqualify it for inclusion in the PSEi’s basket of 30 stocks.
Chinabank Capital Corporation Managing Director Juan Paolo Colet said, “Our calculations show they would still be compliant, though very close to the threshold.”
He noted that the purchase of more Emperador shares “Signifies Andrew Tan’s strong conviction in the business prospects of Emperador and perhaps a view that there is potentially significant upside from his acquisition price.”
After recent declines in earnings, Emperador Inc. ended the first quarter of 2025 on a high note with net income improving by 6.5 percent to ₱1.85 billion as it ramps up its global expansion over the next five years.
The firm said it is further ramping up its global expansion, growing its vineyard portfolio in Spain with an additional 470 hectares of farmland while also expanding its presence in Mexico and doubling its distillery footprint in Scotland.
The global liquor giant sees its global expansion continuing in the next five years, paving the way for significant growth in the near future.
