The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has identified 28 areas across Luzon and Visayas that could experience “dangerous” heat index levels, ranging from 42 degrees Celsius (°C) to 46°C, on Thursday, May 22.
Dagupan City, Pangasinan and Aparri, Cagayan are forecast to record the highest heat index at 46°C, followed by Laoag City, Ilocos Norte at 45°C.
A heat index of 44°C may be recorded in five areas: Batac, Ilocos Norte; Bacnotan, La Union; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; and Camiling, Tarlac.
Eight additional areas may register 43°C, including Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya; Echague, Isabela; Baler, Aurora; Iba, Zambales; Daet, Camarines Norte; Masbate City, Masbate; Pili, Camarines Sur; and Dumangas, Iloilo.
Twelve other areas may record a 42°C heat index: Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Casiguran, Aurora; Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; Olongapo City, Zambales; Cavite City, Cavite; Infanta, Quezon; Legazpi City, Albay; Roxas City, Capiz; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Catarman, Northern Samar; Borongan, Eastern Samar; and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur.
According to PAGASA, heat indices between 42°C and 51°C fall under the “dangerous” category, due to an increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
The weather bureau also warned that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja advised the public to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the heat is most intense.
