The grim discovery quickly spread on social media, prompting the San Rafael Police Station to proceed to the scene on Wednesday, May 21, to verify the report.
Led by acting police chief, Lt. Col. Protom Guevarra, authorities located the unidentified body at the boundary of Barangays Upig and Salapungan.
Guevarra immediately ordered his investigators to dig deeper into the gruesome killing.
Police said they could not move the corpse until personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) arrived to process the evidence.
As of this writing, investigators were still working to determine the victim's identity and track down possible suspects.
Authorities suspect the victim was killed and beheaded elsewhere before being dumped in the river to mislead the investigation.
The search for the missing head continues.
