Operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested a town mayor of Maguindanao del Sur and his wife over their alleged involvement in the ambush-slay of South Upi vice mayor Roldan Benito and his security aide last year.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the couple were collared based on the arrest warrant issued by a Cotabato City court for cases of murder, attempted murder and frustrated murder in Aug. 2 last year.
Torre said couple Rey and Janet (Insular) were charged after a thorough investigation revealed their alleged participation as alleged “masterminds” in the planning and orchestration of the ambush.
Benito and his security aide Weng Marcos were killed during the attack while the vice mayor’s wife, Analyn, and their 11-year old child were wounded in the ambush.
Aside from the couple, Torre said 10 other people were charged in connection with the attack.
Torre said the operation was carried out after the court issued the arrest warrant on May 19 this year.
“This accomplishment underscores the CIDG's commitment in conducting a thorough investigation, filing of airtight case and putting criminals behind bars, with the end view of helping victims and victims' family the justice they deserve," said Torre.
The couple will be presented to the court that issued the arrest warrant, according to Torre.
