PAGASA: Heat index may reach 46 degrees Celsius on May 20
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the heat index levels in 26 areas may range from 42 degrees Celsius (°C) to 46°C on Tuesday, May 20.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, Aparri, Cagayan may record the highest heat index at 46°C.
Six other areas may experience a heat index of 44°C: Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Echague, Isabela; Baler, Aurora; and Camiling, Tarlac.
Meanwhile, nine areas may register 43°C: Batac, Ilocos Norte; Casiguran, Aurora; Iba, Zambales; Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; Olongapo City, Zambales; Cavite City, Cavite; Infanta, Quezon; Masbate City, Masbate; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
Ten additional areas may record a 42°C heat index: Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Bacnotan, La Union; Clark, Pampanga; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Tanauan, Batangas; Daet, Camarines Norte; Legazpi City, Albay; Pili, Camarines Sur; Iloilo City, Iloilo; and Dumangas, Iloilo.
PAGASA classifies a heat index of 42°C to 51°C as “dangerous,” due to an increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
The weather bureau also warned that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
