- Government agencies gathered in Cavite for the large-scale destruction of illegal drugs, reinforcing their united front against narcotics.
Authorities destroyed P5.32 billion worth of illegal drugs and other substances at the Integrated Waste Management, Inc. in Trece Martires City on Tuesday, May 20.
The activity was led by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
Present during the event were PDEA Director General Undersecretary Isagani R. Nerez, Philippine National Police Forensic Group Director Gen. Benjamin DL Sembrano, Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) Acting Provincial Director Col. Dwight E. Alegre, and Dangerous Drugs Board Chair Sec. Oscar F. Valenzuela, who served as the guest of honor and keynote speaker.
“Hindi natin maaaring ipagwalang-bahala ang mas malawak na global drug situation. Sa pagsusuri sa pandaigdigang datos, ating nakikita ang mga pattern at bagong uri ng droga na unti-unting pumapasok sa ating bansa (We cannot ignore the broader global drug situation. By examining international data, we’re seeing patterns and new types of drugs gradually entering our country),” Valenzuela said during his speech, streamed live through Facebook.
“Ngunit isa po ang malinaw: hindi tayo pwedeng panghinaan ng loob (But one thing is clear: we must not lose heart).”
The Dangerous Drugs Board chief also thanked the law enforcers for all their efforts against drugs.
“Kami po ay nagpapasalamat sa mga tagapagpatupad ng batas, sa kanilang pagtitiyak na ang nakumpiskang droga ay hindi na muling makakabalik sa mga komunidad (We are grateful to our law enforcement agencies for ensuring that the confiscated drugs will never find their way back into our communities)," he said.
The drugs destroyed were pieces of evidence seized during anti-drug operations conducted by the PDEA and other partner law enforcement agencies, including those recently ordered by the court for destruction. The dangerous substances were stacked inside a chamber and incinerated beyond recovery.
Among the illegal drugs destroyed were 2.23 metric tons of solid illegal drugs, including shabu, marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, toluene, ketamine, and phenacetin.
Also destroyed using thermal decomposition were 3.45 liters of liquid illegal drugs, including lysergic acid diethylamide or LSD, liquid cocaine, liquid meth, liquid marijuana, and assorted surrendered expired medicines.
In a statement, Cavite PPO said the event further strengthens inter-agency coordination and unity in the fight against illegal drugs.
