The fatalities were an eight-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister.
Fire Officer 2 Rolin Paulan, chief arson investigator of the Bacolod City Fire Station, said the fire originated from a lighted candle on top of a table near the bed of the two children.
Paulan said that there was a power interruption in the area since 9 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
The victims were left alone sleeping as their mother went out to buy food at 12 midnight, Paulan said.
Paulan said the fire was reported at 2:19 a.m.
The house made of light materials was totally destroyed.
Paulan said the victims’ grandfather, Eduardo, 63, who was living nearby, responded and tried to rescue them.
However, the fire was already big, and the two children were trapped. Eduardo sustained second degree burns in the body.
The victims were found near a wooden wall partition adjacent to their bed.
Fire out was declared at 2:33 a.m. Damage to property was estimated at P3,000. No other structures were involved.
