- Despite their early exit, the 5-foot-9 outside spiker was able to display her brilliance, making herself as the first Lady Falcon to win the plum from the 2000s after leading Adamson to a promising fifth place finish with a 6-8 tally.
It came as no surprise when Adamson's Shai Nitura was hailed as the UAAP Season 87 Rookie of the Year in women's volleyball.
The 20-year-old sensation broke one record after another, proving her worth as the next big star in the collegiate league despite falling short of lifting the Lady Falcons to the Final Four.
Nitura, however, is hungrier than ever.
“Siguro ang mapa-promise ko, namin sa Adamson, is i-work on namin [ngayon], para mas maging better kami compared this season,” said Nitura after receiving the Best Rookie plum at Mall of Asia Arena last weekend.
“‘Yon naman siguro goal ng lahat ng teams na maging better than [the previous] season for this competition,” she added.

With her explosiveness during her freshman year, Nitura became a scoring threat against her rivals, listing six 30-point games which was highlighted by her 38-point performance in their five-set loss to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons last March 16.
The Cainta, Rizal native amassed 371 total points, eclipsing a decade-old mark of former collegiate superstar Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo at 312.
“Thank you, Lord po talaga, kasi all of this is dahil sa Kanya and will nya, thank you rin sa mga teammates ko and mga coaches ko,” Nitura continued.
“Nag-help po sila para ma-achieve kopo ‘yong mga na-achieve ko ngayon.”
Nitura is expected to spark the JP Yude-mentored squad in Season 88, along with her fellow rookies Fhei Sagaysay and Frances Mordi.
Nitura suiting up for Alas Pilipinas?
Several photos were circulating in social media, showing Nitura in a practice session of Alas Pilipinas.
But for now, Nitura waits for the announcement on Alas’ final roster.
“Maayos naman po ‘yong kalagayan ko do’n (Alas Pilipinas training), wala pang plans actually, kasi depende pa if ma-line up or not,” Nitura said.
“Ang tinatrabaho kolang po ngayon is mag-improve para po maging qualified for lineup [inclusion],” she concluded.
