PAGASA: Several areas in Luzon, Visayas face 'dangerous' heat index levels on May 19
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said parts of Luzon and Visayas may experience “dangerous” heat index levels on May 19, with feels-like temperatures ranging from 42 to 45 degrees Celsius (°C).
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, Dagupan City, Pangasinan and Aparri, Cagayan may record the highest heat index at 45°C.
Five other areas, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Echague, Isabela; Cavite City, Cavite; and Pili, Camarines Sur, may reach 44°C.
Meanwhile, seven areas may register a heat index of 43°C: Batac, Ilocos Norte; Baler, Aurora; Olongapo City, Zambales; Camiling, Tarlac; Tanauan, Batangas; Infanta, Quezon; and Cuyo, Palawan.
Thirteen additional areas may experience a 42°C heat index: Pasay City and Quezon City in Metro Manila; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Bacnotan, La Union; Casiguran, Aurora; Iba, Zambales; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Daet, Camarines Norte; Legazpi City, Albay; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Dumangas, Iloilo; and Catarman, Northern Samar.
PAGASA defines the dangerous heat index category as ranging from 42°C to 51°C, where the likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion increases.
The weather bureau also warned that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.
