In a statement, the Department of Health (DOH) announced that, under the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Philippines is playing a leading role in shaping a more equitable and resilient global health system—placing the country at the forefront of international health diplomacy.
This historic milestone comes as the Philippines, through the leadership of DOH Secretary Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa, assumes the presidency of the 78th WHA—the first time the nation has held this position.
According to the DOH, President Marcos emphasized the importance of addressing long-term health goals and fostering global dialogue on critical health challenges, reflecting the country’s strong commitment to international cooperation and sustainable healthcare solutions.
As WHA president, Herbosa is leading efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and forge strategic health partnerships with countries around the world.
The Philippines, the DOH added, is also actively engaging in international cooperation initiatives to promote health equity and ensure inclusive healthcare systems at the local, regional, and global levels.
In a key meeting ahead of the assembly, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus met with Herbosa to align priorities for the upcoming summit and reaffirm shared goals of accessible, quality healthcare for all.
