Underscoring the importance of the alliance between the Philippines and the United States, US Department of Defense Undersecretary Elbridge Colby said that they are “doubling down” on the partnership.

Separate posts on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, May 17, showed Colby and Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez in a meeting.
“It was great to meet with Ambassador Romualdez from @DFAPHL,” the defense official wrote as he shared a photo of them shaking hands.
“The U.S.-Philippines alliance is crucial, and we are doubling down on it. The Philippines can know it has a strong, respectful, and committed ally here in America,” he added.
For his part, Romualdez described Colby as a “good friend” who “shares our assessment that the (Philippines and the US) alliance should remain a top priority, and that we must shore up our defense capabilities to address common security challenges.”
“I look forward to our continued close cooperation with the @DeptofDefense,” he added.
The long-time allies have intensified their partnerships in recent years, with the US’ Typhon missile system currently in the Philippines and the continuation of the Balikatan exercises even in areas near Taiwan.
This even as US President Donald Trump wants an “America First” policy that will mean withdrawing defense aid to even its key allies.
Trump and President Marcos have yet to meet since the former’s victory in the 2024 US presidential elections, but Romualdez said that they are working for a meeting later this year.
