Heat index may reach dangerous levels in 24 areas on May 18 — PAGASA
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) urged the public to take precautions against possible heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses, as 24 areas may experience dangerous heat index levels on Sunday, May 18.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, Aparri, Cagayan may record the highest heat index at 45 degrees Celsius (°C).
Three other areas, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; and Camiling, Tarlac, may register a heat index of 44°C.
Meanwhile, eight areas may reach a 43°C heat index. These include Batac, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Baler, Aurora; Olongapo City, Zambales; Cavite City, Cavite; Daet, Camarines Norte; Masbate City, Masbate; and Catarman, Northern Samar.
The remaining 12 areas may experience a heat index of 42°C: Pasay City, Metro Manila; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Bacnotan, La Union; Calayan, Cagayan; Iba, Zambales; Infanta, Quezon; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Legazpi City, Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; Pili, Camarines Sur; Iloilo City, Iloilo; and Borongan, Eastern Samar.
PAGASA classifies heat index values between 42°C and 51°C as “dangerous” due to the increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
The weather bureau also warned that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
