A well-rested Rain or Shine is looking to put the first blemish to Magnolia’s pristine slate when they lock horns in the 2025 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, May 18, at the Ynares Center Montalban in Rizal.
Coming off a 10-day respite after picking up their third win in five games, the Elasto Painters are poised to put up a massive challenge against the Hotshots who are trying to protect a clean 6-0 slate in the contest that tips-off at 7:30 p.m.
In the first offering, San Miguel also hopes to stay in the upper half of the standings when it takes on the slumping Terrafirma at 5 p.m.
With its vital pieces already coming back after nursing injuries at the start of the conference, Rain or Shine is aiming for a victory that would not only allow it to notch another win streak but more importantly keep in step with the other teams in the middle of the pack.
Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao is of course expected to employ his patented run-and-gun attack especially with great open court players in the likes of Adrian Nocum, Jhonard Clarito and Gian Mamuyac.
And even if Magnolia’s defense tries to slow the attack down, ROS has cerebral players in Andrei Caracut and veterans Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga, and Keith Datu, who fresh from a career-best performance last time out to steer the team.
Easier said than done, however, especially with Magnolia being on a tear so far in the conference – evident in the last game where it easily dismantled defending champion Meralco, 117-92.
Seemingly tearing a page from Guiao’s playbook which utilizes his bench, head coach Chito Victolero’s new system is also thriving with a more balanced offense with young guys like Zav Lucero and Jerom Lastimosa leading the charge.
Paul Lee also reminded everyone that he is still the same lethal weapon for the Hotshots after exploding from the four-point territory in their last game. Ian Sangalang, Mark Barroca and even bench players like Rome Dela Rosa and James Laput all provided solid contributions to the team’s perfect run so far.
