Man arrested in Manila for illegal possession of firearm amid election gun ban

  • The suspect, identified as Angelo Rodriguez and a resident of Palawan Street, Barangay 537, Sampaloc, Manila, was apprehended by authorities at around 11:05 a.m. on May 16, at the corner of Palawan Street and G. Tuazon Street.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Sampaloc, Manila, for causing public alarm while wielding an improvised firearm, in violation of existing gun laws and the nationwide election gun ban.

The suspect, identified as Angelo Rodriguez and a resident of Palawan Street, Barangay 537, Sampaloc, Manila, was apprehended by authorities at around 11:05 a.m. on May 16, at the corner of Palawan Street and G. Tuazon Street.

The Manila Police District (MPD) assigned to the Gulod Police Community Precinct under the MPD Sampaloc Police Station responded to a report from a concerned citizen about a man disturbing the peace while brandishing a firearm in the area.

Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect openly wielding a firearm and causing alarm among residents.

When confronted, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly subdued by responding police.

Recovered from his possession was an improvised firearm and a live .45 caliber ammunition.

Initial investigation revealed that the firearm was undocumented.

The suspect was arrested on the spot and was later brought to Ospital ng Sampaloc for a medico-legal examination and subsequently turned over to the Sampaloc Police Station for further investigation.

The suspect is facing charges for Violation of Article 155 of the Revised Penal Code (Alarms and Scandals) and Republic Act No. 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act of 2013), in relation to the Omnibus Election Code’s nationwide gun ban.

He remains in police custody and will be subjected to inquest proceedings at the appropriate Prosecutor’s Office.

The confiscated firearm and ammunition were sent to the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory for ballistic testing and verification.
