ILOILO CITY – Mayor Receliste “Tanoy” Escolin was reelected in President Roxas town, Capiz province, despite the three-term limit.
ESCOLIN
The Commission on Elections proclaimed Escolin as mayor after defeating Vice Mayor Braulio Godfrey “Botoy” Asis and Bart Locsin.
Escolin maintained that he can still be mayor because he will not be able to complete his nine years of service by June 30, 2025.
He claimed that his term was interrupted when the Office of the Ombudsman suspended him for three months from February to May 2024 for simple misconduct.
Under the Local Government Code, local chief executives are limited to three terms or nine consecutive years in office. They are barred from serving a fourth consecutive term.
Escolin has been citing a Supreme Court decision and an opinion of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in defense.
He is facing a disqualification case before the Comelec.
“Until now, there is a pending case against the mayor,” said Comelec-6 Regional Director Atty. Dennis Ausan. “There’s a petition challenging the legitimacy of his candidacy,” Ausan said.
