Temperatures may feel like 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in 23 areas on May 16, says PAGASA
As scorching conditions persist across the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that 23 areas may experience “danger” level heat index values ranging from 42 to 44 degrees Celsius (°C) on Friday, May 16.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, four areas may record the highest heat index of 44 degrees Celsius (°C). These are Bacnotan, La Union; Cavite City, Cavite; Infanta, Quezon; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.
Five other areas may register a heat index of 43°C. These are Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Aparri, Cagayan; Daet, Camarines Norte; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
Meanwhile, a 42°C heat index is possible in 14 areas: Pasay City, Metro Manila; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Baler, Aurora; Iba, Zambales; Olongapo City, Zambales; Camiling, Tarlac; Tanauan, Batangas; Coron, Palawan; Cuyo, Palawan; Legazpi City, Albay; Masbate City, Masbate; Juban, Sorsogon; Pili, Camarines Sur; and Catarman, Northern Samar.
PAGASA classifies a heat index ranging from 42°C to 51°C as “dangerous” due to the increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
The weather bureau added that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
