  • 'The boring, too often repeated, questions I field all the time are, 'What's your favorite place – followed by what's the most dangerous thing that's ever happened to you – and then where do you never want to go to again.''
Russia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the US… These four places are no longer worth visiting.
That is, at least according to “Lonely Planet” travel guide co-founder Tony Wheeler, who recently shared a list of locations he has sworn off from ever returning to. Alongside his wife, Maureen, Tony has spent a good chunk of his life traveling the world and writing guidebooks about key locations worth checking out.

In a blog post that initially started as just four countries, Tony has since doubled down and named three more areas he has fallen out of love with. Here are the seven destinations and why Tony has adamantly proclaimed he will never visit them again.
Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia
In what seems like a reluctant move from Tony, Bali is included in his list for one simple reason… traffic. He cites how he had to sit through two hours of congested roads to get from the airport to Ubud. Tony, however, feels he can still be convinced to return if he finds there’s a good reason Bali can entice him to come back.
Myanmar
Myanmar
Burma/Myanmar
Officially recognized as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the country found itself ditching the former name after its government switched to the latter to disassociate from its colonial roots. Tony writes about how he has seen Myanmar go through its ups and downs during his many visits in the past. Ultimately, Tony ends the piece by bringing up his visit to a Rohingya refugee settlement in Bangladesh.
Russia
Russia
Russia and Belarus
Russia and Belarus go hand in hand with Tony’s reasoning, as he mentions how the two nations’ governments are complicit in the ongoing war with Ukraine. With Belarus, Tony also recalls an incident where Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko hijacked a Ryanair flight to arrest Belarusian blogger Roman Protasevich for supposedly criticizing his regime.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia
Though Tony recalls a wonderful time during his visit in 2002, he doesn’t hold back in calling out Saudi Arabia for its human rights record. He brings up the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the abuse of domestic workers from East Africa, and how he once witnessed cheetahs being rescued in Somaliland that were about to be brought to Saudi Arabia to become pets.
Israel
Israel
Israel
Without hesitation, in Tony’s added list, he mentions Israel would have topped his original blog post after someone pointed out its absence. Tony remembers how he had a guide in Israel who took him on what was dubbed the “Jesus Trail.” Together, they explored Hattin Village, a place formerly home to 1,300 Palestinians before they had to flee or were pushed out in 1948. His guide, despite losing his parents to the Hamas attack in 2023, remains hopeful that peace between Israelis and Palestinians is possible. Until then, Tony mentions how he “cannot live with the Israeli attack on Gaza,” ending with an urgent plea for Israel’s attacks to stop.
The US
The US
The US
Tony only has three states left to go to declare he has visited all 50 states of the US, but for now, it seems unlikely he’ll be achieving the milestone. Even after spending nearly a decade in the country and having many friends, Tony has shared that he has no intention of touching US soil while President Donald Trump and his associates remain in power. “As long as Trumpistan is shoulder to shoulder with Russia and North Korea in causing chaos in the world, quite apart from crazy tariffs—sorry, but no thanks,” writes Tony.
