If not Senate leadership, Sotto keen on heading Senate ethics panel

Presumptive senator Vicente Sotto III on Friday, May 16 said he is keen on asking the Senate leadership to be allowed to head the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges so he can help restore the dignity and the good image of the institution.

Sotto, who will return to the Senate in the next 20th Congress after winning in the May 2025 elections, said he will ask this favor if he is not elected as Senate president.

“If my colleagues do not elect me as Senate president, I will ask for the committee on ethics,” Sotto said in a Zoom interview.

“You would know why…the definition of the committee on ethics speaks for itself,” the former leader of the Upper Chamber stressed.

Sotto said it is necessary to maintain ethical standards for senators, observe proper decorum and be strict on rules.

“There should be ethical standards for senators.  We should be strict on the rules. Kung gusto natin makita ng taong bayan na maganda ang image ng Senado, matino, maayos… Ganun ang gusto natin (If we want the people to see that the Senate has a good image, is sensible, and orderly... That's what we want),” he said.

“That’s how the Senate was in the four and a half years that I was a senator,” Sotto stressed.

Sotto, who was at the helm of the Senate leadership before, said he already has “an excellent practice of parliamentary rules and procedures, which he vows to continue to serve as a ““very good example for the young.”

“That’s why I had a very excellent practice of parliamentary rules and procedures. It should be followed by the Senate so it ca be a very good example for the young,” he further said.

Moreover, Sotto cited the importance of having an independent Senate.

“The Senate leadership should truly be independent. That should be our thinking, and I have done that for four and a half years,” Sotto said.
