- National University and Far Eastern University slug it out for the last time for the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball title at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday, May 17.
Match is at 2 p.m. with the five-peat seeking Bulldogs banking on their hard-fought 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11 Game 2 win last Wednesday, May 14, that kept their bid alive in this best-of-three finals affair.
In that game, the Dante Alinsunurin-mentored crew was nothing but impressive in keeping its championship poise, overcoming an 8-5 deficit and Ryx Saavedra’s brilliance in the fifth set to complete its resurgence thanks to Obed Mukaba and Buds Buddin.
“Siguro yung experience namin mas lumabas lang sa court, and nakita ko lang yung isa sa mga naging advantage namin yung naging blockings namin,” said Buddin, who starred in last two finals contests despite missing several game for NU in the eliminations.
“Every set talaga lumalaban kami para sa pamilya namin, sa pangarap namin, yun talaga yung motivation namin,” he added as the Bulldogs aim to join their female counterparts to the podium after the Lady Bulldogs captured the title in the women’s side.
Alinsunurin said trust remains one of the key factors that keeps their program going, hoping to see that in this last and crucial match of the season.
Buddin and Mukaba are ready to lead the Bulldogs to their sixth overall crown with Leo Ordiales, Leo Oringo, Rwenzmel Taguibolos, and Greg Ancheta at the forefront.
Not to be outdone are the Tamaraws, who gun to end their 13-year title drought.
FEU aims to regain the same firepower that won them in Game 1, 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13 with Zhydryx Saavedra and Chad Absin at the forefront of its attack.
“Yun siguro yung lesson samin: na maging composed kami next game. Hindi pa naman tapos yung laban kaya babawi kami,” sai Absin.
“Test of character sa bawat isa samin, coaches, players… composed dapat yung bawat isa samin,” added FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo, who helped the Tamaraws get closer to their 26th crown in league history.
Out to lend a helping hand for the Tamaraws are Amet Bituin, Mikko Espartero, Lirick Mendoza, Ariel Cacao and Vennie Ceballos.
