'Tara, Basa!' enters 3rd year: DSWD's reading tutoring program begins May 19
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will launch the third year of its “Tara, Basa!” tutoring program on Monday, May 19 to boost literacy among grade school students and strengthen parental support through learning sessions for parents or guardians.
DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao on Thursday, May 15 announced that the program is set to benefit 138,407 participants, including college student tutors, incoming Grade 2 learners, and their parents or guardians.
“The DSWD is now ready for the expanded Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program. We have been conducting several capacity-building and training sessions for college students who will be deployed as tutors and youth development workers (YDWs) to ensure that they are ready to teach struggling or non-reader elementary students and their parents or guardians,” Dumlao said.
She said this year’s rollout includes over 12,000 college student tutors who will work with more than 60,000 elementary school learners nationwide.
In addition, 6,019 YDWs will conduct “Nanay-Tatay Teacher” sessions for another 60,000 parents and guardians.
The program will be implemented across 13 regions, including Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Caraga, National Capital Region, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, through DSWD Field Office 10.
Since its inception in 2023, the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program has served over 197,000 college students, elementary learners, and their parents or guardians.
Dumlao also said educational materials have been updated in collaboration with education experts, including enhancements to the Nanay-Tatay teacher modules, tutor guidebooks, and student workbooks.
“With these improvements and expanded coverage, we are positive that the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program will make an even greater impact in bridging literacy gaps and empowering families through education,” she said.
The initiative, conducted in partnership with the Department of Education, offers cash-for-work incentives to college students who complete 20 tutoring sessions.
Compensation is based on regional minimum wage rates.
President Marcos declared Tara, Basa! a flagship national government program under Executive Order No. 76, signed on Nov. 22, 2024.
