DUMAGUETE CITY – The cremated remains of four overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) – two of them from Negros Oriental province – who died in the Myanmar earthquake last April, will be transported to the Philippines next week.

The bodies of Negrense couple Edsil Jess and Alexis Gale Adalid, who were both from Bais City, are expected to arrive at the Dumaguete-Sibulan airport by May 24, to be brought to Bais for the wake.
Edsil’s mother, Hermosila Adalid, in an online interview with the Philippine News Agency on Thursday, said arrangements are now being made for the return of the remains.
“Yesterday, the Philippine Embassy in Yangon conducted an online meeting with us next of kin of the four OFWs. We were given three options or scenarios, and we chose the first one,” she said.
Their option included allowing one representative per family to travel to Myanmar, and on May 21, the remains and personal belongings of the deceased would be turned over to them, she added.

The quake fatalities were teachers at the Mandalay International School of Acumen in Myanmar, and were renting a unit on the ninth floor of Building D of Sky Villa, a five-building residential property that collapsed during the earthquake.
They perished in the magnitude-7.7 earthquake on March 28 and were found under the rubble weeks later.
The couple will be buried in early June after the arrival of Edsil Jess’ brother from Australia.
Meanwhile, Adalid said the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers have also informed the families of the quake victims of government assistance once the requirements are completed. (PNA)
