In preparation for the rainy season, Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval inspected the Malabon-Navotas river navigational floodgate on Wednesday, May 14, following reports of mechanical issues that prevented it from effectively functioning as a barrier against rising floodwaters.
Now that we are experiencing frequent afternoon rains, expect us to be here, ready to provide immediate assistance. We will focus on repairing the reported damage to the navigational gate to support its operation)," she said.
During the inspection, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) informed Mayor Sandoval and the City Engineering Department (CED) that navigational gate repair would take approximately one month.
Meanwhile, 44 pumping stations and 120 floodgates in the city—managed by the local government, MMDA, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)—remain fully operational.
In line with the city’s flood mitigation efforts, several upgraded pumping stations and improved drainage systems were recently inaugurated in Barangays San Agustin, Tanong, Baritan, and Concepcion.
