It’s a story that centers on fulfilling dreams—that’s what Newport World Resorts’ Filipino musical offering, “Delia D.: A Musical Featuring the Songs of Jonathan Manalo,” is all about.

Phi Palmos as Delia
Before the show’s opening, it already made a buzz in June 2024, when its lead actor Phi Palmos performed Jonathan’s hit “Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw” during the curtain call of “Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical.” Auditions for the cast took place in September that year, and by April this year, Filipino audiences returned to the Newport Performing Arts Theater to witness the spectacle of this homegrown production.
At the center of it all is Delia (Phi), a drag performer from Ozamis who works at a nightclub to support her family. When she hears about the “Idols of the Galaxy” competition, Delia sees it as an opportunity to achieve her dream of becoming a bona fide singer.
The 'Idols of the Galaxy' scene
Director Dexter Santos and playwright Dolly Dulu capture on stage Filipinos’ passion and obsession with singing and reality competitions, offering audiences a glimpse of what makes a true champion—a star who possesses that elusive “X Factor.”
This tale is perfectly delivered with the help of Jonathan’s iconic songs, masterfully arranged by Vince Lim. Beloved hits like “Paano Bang Magmahal,” “Tara Tena,” and “Sikat Ang Pinoy” are reimagined with fresh energy, seamlessly woven with new original songs that reflect the aspirations and spirit of the Filipino dream.
Adding flair to the music and text is the show’s stellar cast. Phi showcases Delia’s layers—her tenacity, charisma, and flaws. His portrayal brings to life a character that the audience wants to root for and vote for, but also one that people can’t help but judge as the story unfolds. Shaira Opsimar belts her heart out as Kiki, another aspirant who is shy and reserved but has major vocal chops. Floyd Tena, Mimi Marquez, and Tex Ordoñez-De Leon command the stage as powerful star-makers, each leaving a lasting impact with their presence.
One of the things that makes the show stand out is how it brings the art of drag from nightclubs to the stage. Not only does it present the glitz and fabulous aspects of Filipino drag, but also how the craft forges connections—chosen families—in the LGBTQIA+ community. John Lapus, who returns to the stage after 15 years as Mama Eme, showcases how a drag house serves as both a sanctuary and a source of empowerment, where individuals find belonging, support, and strength in their shared artistry and identity.
“Delia D.” is also a treat for Filipino audiences who grew up loving “Hairspray,” “Bituin Walang Ningning,” “Glee,” and other pop culture staples. It’s a quest for fame, but also a story about friendship, illusion, and the realization of one’s true dream. As Dolly said, “What if the dream you’ve fought for isn’t the dream meant for you?” As for Delia’s true dream—that’s something audiences will have to see unfold on stage.
“Delia D.: A Musical Featuring the Songs of Jonathan Manalo” runs until June 8, 2025, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. Tickets are now available at SM Tickets, TicketWorld, HelixPay, and the Newport World Resorts Box Office.
