'Danger' level heat index may hit over 20 areas on May 15
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that 23 areas across the country may experience heat index levels classified under the “danger” category on Thursday, May 15.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, six areas may record the highest heat index of 43 degrees Celsius (°C). These are Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Bacnotan, La Union; Aparri, Cagayan; Iba, Zambales; Tayabas City, Quezon; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.
Seventeen other areas may register a heat index of 42°C. These are Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Baler, Aurora; Casiguran, Aurora; Olongapo City, Zambales; Cavite City, Cavite; Tanauan, Batangas; Los Baños, Laguna; Coron, Palawan; Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Masbate City, Masbate; Pili, Camarines Sur; Roxas City, Capiz; Mambusao, Capiz; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Dumangas, Iloilo; and Catarman, Northern Samar.
PAGASA classifies a heat index ranging from 42°C to 51°C as “dangerous” due to the increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
It added that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
