Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna crushed Uzbek Madinabonu Khalilova of Uzbekistan in the seventh round to storm back into contention in the Asian Individual Chess Championships in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, May 13.
The 28-year-old Olympiad veteran needed 39 moves of a Sicilian Defense to propel back into the Top 10 where she shared sixth place with six others with 5 points apiece in this nine-round meet.
The enlisted Army personnel also moved one point behind co-leaders WGM Seshadri Srija of India and Bat-Erdene Mangunzul of Mongolia, who have six points each.
Frayna could inch even closer and possibly end up contending for a top two finish and that World Cup spot if she ends up sweeping her last two assignments including one against fourth-seeded Chinese International Master Song Yuxin in the eighth and penultimate round.
Lurking 1.5 points behind Frayna were teammates Marie Antoinette San Diego and Bernadette Galas with 3.5 points while Jan Jodilyn Fronda had three points.
In the open section, Filipinos Pau Bersamina and Jem Garcia continued to find their way and have four points apiece while Daniel Quizon had three points.
