Gov. Degamo widow elected congresswoman in Negros Oriental

Thus said Pamplona, Negros Oriental Mayor Janice Degamo after she was proclaimed by the Provincial Board of Canvassers as the winning candidate in the congressional race in the third district of the province on Tuesday, May 13.

Degamo, widow of slain Gov. Roel Degamo, garnered 158,007 votes against her two opponents – Reynaldo Lopez and Janice Teves, auntie of former Gov. Henry Teves and ousted Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr.
Mayor Degamo won amid a disqualification complaint filed against her last month regarding her residency in Siaton town.
According to her legal counsel, she completed the residency requirement of one year in Siaton, enabling her to qualify as a congressional candidate in the third district.
The Degamo couple resides in Barangay Bonawon, Siaton, where Gov. Degamo was laid to rest. They manage a fishing business based in the town.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Island Region (NIR) clarified the process for a disqualification case. Such a case must first be resolved by the Comelec First Division. After that, a motion for reconsideration can be filed before the Comelec en banc.
If necessary, the case can be elevated to the Supreme Court for appeal or request a Temporary Restraining Order.
Comelec officials noted the timing of the complaint which was filed close to the election date.
They said if Degamo wins in the May 12 polls, the issue may become moot and academic. This is because once a candidate is proclaimed and takes an oath, questions about their qualifications fall under the jurisdiction of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal.
In a Facebook video, the third district representative-elect visited her late husband’s grave at the Degamo and thanked the people of the third district for their trust and vowed to repay their support with genuine service.
She dedicated her victory to her husband and said the people’s efforts reflected their desire for justice for her husband.
Gov. Degamo was gunned down in March 2023 in Pamplona town and Mayor Degamo tagged Rep. Teves as behind the assassination, an allegation that was denied by the latter’s camp.
