The lawmaker was accompanied by his second son and namesake of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Rodrigo “Rigo” II, who is vying for a seat as councilor in the first district.
Rigo also voted in the same precinct.
Rep. Duterte’s first son, Omar Vincent, a candidate for congressman in the city’s second district, voted separately in a school in Buhangin District. The father and sons arrived at their precincts at almost 9 a.m.
Vice President Sara Duterte had earlier cast her ballot in a school in Barangay Matina Crossing around 8:30 a.m. The Vice President has the same polling precinct as her father, the former Chief Executive.
The elder Duterte was unable to cast his vote today due to his ongoing detention at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, where he is facing charges of alleged crimes against humanity. He still remains on the official list of candidates in the election.
Vice President Duterte told the media that she gave former President Duterte a list of preferred candidates from their group who she considers to have a high likelihood of securing victory in the elections. She, however, did not disclose the names or the total number of endorsements.
“I really hope we did our best in campaigning for new individuals in the Senate, and I hope that we made the messaging clear for our fellow citizens as to why they should vote straight for the PDP-Laban senators,” Vice President Duterte said.
The Dutertes are among the prominent political families in Davao City participating in this year’s midterm elections, which saw thousands of Davaoeños heading to polling precincts across the city.
