A total of 159 violators were arrested nationwide on the first day of the implementation of the liquor ban, the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Monday, May 12.
PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said most of those arrested were in Eastern Visayas with 63 while 32 violators were apprehended each in Negros Island Region and Mimaropa.
In Metro Manila, a total of 19 violators were arrested.
Police have repeatedly warned the store owners against selling liquor and the public not to engage in any drinking session from May 11 to May 12.
The liquor ban prohibits the selling, serving, buying, offering, and consumption of alcoholic beverages during the two-day election period in a bid to prevent risk of alcohol-related incidents that could disrupt the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections.
