The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the license of a truck driver involved in a viral road accident in Quezon province as part of its intensified efforts to strengthen road safety nationwide.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II said the driver was also ordered to submit a written explanation on why his license should not be revoked for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle, in violation of Republic Act 4136.

In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to uphold road safety, Mendoza added that the truck’s operator was likewise directed to explain why no sanctions should be imposed for employing a reckless driver.

Initial findings from the LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division, headed by Renante Melitante, showed that the truck’s brakes failed while it was traveling downhill from Atimonan to Plaridel, causing it to lose control and overturn.

The driver and his companion sustained minor injuries, while the vehicle was severely damaged.

As part of the investigation, Melitante issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) requiring the driver to surrender his license during the first hearing set for May 16.

Mendoza said the probe would also determine whether the truck operator conducts regular maintenance checks on its fleet to prevent similar accidents.

The case forms part of the LTO’s broader crackdown on negligent truck drivers and operators, which intensified following a fatal crash at the Katipunan Flyover in December 2024.

Since then, the agency has apprehended hundreds of violators and issued numerous SCOs for infractions such as operating vehicles with worn-out tires.
