Dangerous heat index forecast in dozens of areas for Election Day
As millions of Filipinos head to the polls, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that 28 areas across the country could experience “dangerous” heat index levels on Monday, May 12, with temperatures that may feel like 42 to 45 degrees Celsius (°C).
PAGASA reported that Cavite City, Cavite and Catarman, Northern Samar may record the highest heat index at 45°C.
A heat index of 43°C is forecast in 11 other areas: Echague, Isabela; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Tayabas City, Quezon; Tanauan, Batangas; Legazpi City, Albay; Juban, Sorsogon; Pili, Camarines Sur; Roxas City, Capiz; Mambusao, Capiz; Dumangas, Iloilo; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
Meanwhile, a 42°C heat index may affect 15 areas: Pasay City, Metro Manila; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Bacnotan, La Union; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Olongapo City, Zambales; Infanta, Quezon; Coron, Palawan; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Cuyo, Palawan; Masbate City, Masbate; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Guiuan, Eastern Samar; and Maasin, Southern Leyte.
PAGASA classifies heat index values between 42°C and 51°C as dangerous due to the increased risk of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
It added that prolonged exposure may lead to heatstroke, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
