The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) may overturn the result of the Charly Suarez and Emanuel Navarrete fight which resulted in a controversial technical decision loss for the Filipino challenger last Sunday, May 11.
The commission reportedly looked into the bout where the Mexican prevailed after the match was halted by referee Edward Collantes in the eighth round per the advice of ringside physician Dr. Robert Ruelaz.
Rualez ruled that Navarrete was unfit to continue the fight due to the blood streaming down Navarrete's left eyebrow after what the officials called as an "accidental head collision" in the sixth frame
But in video replays, it appeared that it was Suarez's powerful left hook that caused the deep cut.
According to a report by Boxing Scene, the CSAC could come up with the revision of the result, which initially favored Navarrete to retain the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight belt.
No less than Top Rank vice president of operations Carl Moretti has suggested his plans of giving a "deserved rematch" for Navarrete and Suarez moments the bout.
Both fighters also said they are interested in facing each other in the coming months.
“He would be a great opponent [and] he is a great opponent. So a rematch would be good,” said Navarrete.
“I respect Navarrete because he’s a good boxer, and he’ll give me a chance to rematch after a fight that was entertaining,” Suarez said. “I’m sad, but I have the hope they will give me another chance. Maybe next time.”
