AFP raises possible election interference in interception of P441M in cash at Cebu airport
PNP says money may be tied to Que kidnapping
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said the interception of P441 million in cash from 11 suspects at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) over the weekend raised serious concerns about potential illegal activities related to the midterm elections.
Nine foreigners and two Filipinos were arrested after being caught carrying bags filled with cash amounting to P441.92 million at the General Aviation Area of the MCIA between 11:30 p.m. on May 9 and 4:14 a.m. on May 10, ahead of the May 12 polls.
“This incident raises serious concerns about potential election-related illegal activities, including vote-buying and money laundering. The involvement of multiple foreign nationals strongly suggests the alarming possibility of foreign interference in our sovereign electoral process,” Col. Francel Margareth Padilla, AFP spokesperson, said.
The seized cash was set to be flown aboard private aircraft flight RP-C9968 bound for Manila.
Apprehended were six Chinese, one Malaysian, one Indonesian, one Kazakhstani, and two Filipino nationals. The group arrived in a white Toyota Super Grandia (plate number NGL 5798) and allegedly attempted to bypass standard security protocols.
Meanwhile, the AFP said that the suspects' failure to provide valid documentation for transporting such a significant amount of cash constitutes a clear violation of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Resolution No. 11104, which regulates and penalizes the unauthorized transport of large sums of money during the election period.
The AFP reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of democratic institutions.
“We laud the vigilance and rapid response of the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies, whose actions may have averted a significant threat to our democracy,” Padilla said.
The AFP called on the citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the elections.
Around 68 million Filipinos are expected to cast their votes nationwide for the midterm elections.
