A time for choosing

PEACE-MAKER
The election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome has taken many by surprise. The first American pope, he was not even among the frontrunners in the conclave. Yet, perhaps in this moment of global uncertainty and profound upheaval, the College of Cardinals saw in him the kind of shepherd the Church and the world desperately need.
As a cardinal, Prevost, who has taken the papal name of Pope Leo XIV, stood out for his dedication to dialogue, reconciliation, and service to the marginalized. As a person, he is known for his simplicity, gentleness, and deep spiritual grounding. These are the very qualities that the world hungers for in a time of great division, when leadership too often becomes synonymous with power rather than service.
We join the 1.4 billion Roman Catholics around the globe in praying for Pope Leo XIV as he faces the daunting challenges of our time—the deepening divisions and discord in the international community; the venomous political atmosphere plaguing many democracies; the bloody wars and persistent conflicts that tear nations apart; and the growing threats from climate change, poverty, and the long-elusive dream of peace. These are not just global issues—they are human issues, moral issues. And they require a moral leader at the helm of the Catholic Church.
We must admit, like many of our fellow Filipinos, we had fervently hoped that our own Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle would ascend to the papacy. Cardinal Tagle is a man of great intellect and spiritual depth. His pastoral kindness, his deep empathy for the poor, and his global perspective make him one of the most beloved figures in the Church today. We Filipinos take immense pride in him—not merely because he is a fellow Filipino, but because of his extraordinary capacity for leadership.
But ultimately, more than national pride, what is crucial is choosing a pope suited to the needs of the times. The Holy Spirit, we believe, moves in mysterious ways—and Pope Leo XIV’s election is a reminder that the best leaders often emerge from where we least expect them.
Interestingly, the election of the new pope almost coincided with the Philippine midterm elections scheduled tomorrow, May 12, when we choose our senators and local leaders. Just as we hope for a pope who can guide humanity through turbulent waters, we also pray that our voters will elect leaders who can help rebuild and strengthen our nation.
Competent and principled local leadership is essential—not just for economic growth, but for peace-building, environmental stewardship, and social justice. In this deeply interconnected world, good governance at home has ripple effects abroad. We hope that our next set of senators and local officials will be nation-builders—leaders who will rise above self-interest and contribute, in whatever way they can, to solving not only our domestic problems but also to playing a role in addressing global challenges.
Lastly, as we reflect on leadership and nation-building, we must not forget to celebrate the most enduring builders of all—our mothers. As we mark Mother’s Day, we extend our warmest greetings to all mothers in the Philippines and around the world. They are the heart of our homes, the soul of our communities, and the silent architects of our societies. It is through their daily sacrifices, their strength, and their boundless love that the foundations of a better world are laid.
To Pope Leo XIV, we pray for strength and wisdom. To the Filipino electorate, we appeal for discernment. And to all mothers, we offer our deepest gratitude and love.
