Despite a downpour, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte and his sister, Veronica “Kitty” Duterte, attended the event, and rallied support for the 10 Senate bets of PDP-Laban, chaired by former President Rodrigo Duterte, known as “DuterTEN.”
In a video message, the former President’s eldest son, first district Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, called on Davaoeños and Filipinos to support DuterTEN. He also endorsed HTL candidates as representatives and councilors for the city’s first, second, and third districts.
Among the DuterTEN who traveled here to participate in the HTL miting de avance at Veterans’ Monument, Ponciano, were reelectionist Senators Ronald dela Rosa and Christopher Lawrence Go, lawyers Vic Rodriguez, Jimmy Bondoc, and Jayvee Hinlo, Dr. Richard Mata, and Philip Salvador.
Their attendance followed PDP-Laban’s miting de avance on Thursday at Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila.
Absent at the rally here were Sagip party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, legal adviser Raul Lambino, and detained religious leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, who delivered a video message.
In their campaign speeches, the senatorial candidates urged the public to unite and vote straight for the DuterTEN on May 12, emphasizing the importance of securing enough seats to defend Vice President Sara Duterte from likely impeachment proceedings and the nation’s progress.
They denounced the arrest of former President Duterte, currently detained in the Hague, Netherlands, for alleged crimes against humanity, branding it as unlawful and asserted that the International Criminal Court lacks jurisdiction over the Philippines.
They criticized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration for failure to deliver the promise of P20 per kilo rice. They accused him of leveraging financial assistance or “ayuda” to influence voters during the campaign.
Aside from the PDP and HTL candidates, the Duterte siblings asked for support for Pwersa ng Pilipinong Pandagat, a new party-list group focused on supporting and advocating the Philippine maritime community. The Duterte camp said PPP would not leave anyone behind.
Rep. Duterte thanked the people of Davao for their unwavering support and trust in their father, former President Duterte, and the Duterte family. He encouraged the public to ponder the nation’s progress as they again choose which leaders to entrust their votes to on May 12.
“Let us show them that the people of Davao cannot be bought with financial assistance, money, rice, or whatever else they try to offer,” said Rep. Duterte who enlightened the crowd’s mood by asking them to ignore the flat iron behind him that he forgot to put away before his video message.
Rep. Duterte conveyed former President Duterte’s gratitude to the people.
Veronica, in her remarks, added that the elder Duterte is excited to return as Davao City mayor. She said the former Chief Executive loves and cares so much about his hometown and the people of Davao.
Former President Duterte is running for mayor and Mayor Baste Duterte for vice mayor post. Rep. Duterte is seeking reelection, his son Rodrigo II is running for first district councilor, and Omar Duterte is aiming to represent the second district at the House of Representatives.
Mayor Duterte called on the people of Davao to remain alert as the national and local elections approach and aimed at former allies who, he said, left the HTL party and joined the current leader of the country to pursue their agendas.
“Rody Duterte has long demonstrated progressive leadership and governance. Yet, some have shifted allegiance simply after aligning with the current administration. It appears that personal gain has taken precedence over principles for them,” Mayor Duterte said.
The miting de avance concluded at around 11 p.m. with Mayor Duterte appearing alongside Veronica and the DuterTEN senatorial candidates. Former President Duterte’s longtime partner, Honeylet, also graced the event.
