From mother to muse: Meet the women who inspired these Filipino designers

How moms shaped these designers' love for fashion and influenced their personal style

Many of us first discovered fashion through our mothers—their sense of style, the way they carried themselves, and the care they put into every outfit. Through their way of dressing, we learned that fashion is not just about clothing but about confidence, identity, and self-expression passed down from one generation to the next.
This Mother’s Day, these Filipino designers share with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle the best style lessons they learned from their moms—wisdom that eventually became the creed they follow when creating pieces for their clients, and even for their own mothers.

My mom always told me, ‘Don’t just follow trends—wear what makes you feel good,’ and that ‘style doesn’t have to shout.’ She taught me that confidence—and being grateful for the little things in your everyday life—is the best thing you can wear. Looking elegant doesn’t mean being overdone. She was a master at balancing ease with polish—always put-together, but never trying too hard. That stuck with me and shaped how I approach design today.—Sari Lazaro Tiu, with mommy Celia

The best style advice I received from my mom wasn’t something she said—it was how she lived. I grew up watching her shop, run her own boutique, and dress up every day. I would sit in her room and watch as she fixed her hair, did her makeup, and carefully chose her jewelry and outfit from head to toe. There was no specific tip or rule she gave me, but her lifestyle and love for dressing up left a lasting impression on me. Dressing well made her happy—and so it did for me, even at a very young age. I think that’s what inspired me to become a designer: to help women feel good and happy through the simple, powerful act of dressing up.—Andrea Tetangco, with mommy Chee

Always dress well, even when you’re at home. Actively choosing to dress appropriately—even if it’s just for yourself—helps you feel good and prepares you for the day ahead, whether it’s running errands or welcoming a surprise guest. When I design for my mom, I always aim to enhance her assets—particularly her décolletage and proportions. I choose impactful colors and balance her figure to create a simple yet elegant look that always makes her stand out.—Rosenthal Tee (far right), with sister Raissa Tee, grandmom Maura So, and mommy Rosemarie Tee
My mom is incredibly practical when it comes to fashion—it’s always comfort first. Growing up, I learned from her that it’s good to rewear your outfits; it shouldn’t be a wear-once thing. The best way to rewear clothes is by mixing and matching separates with other pieces. The looks are endless, and switching up your hairstyle or getting a haircut makes a big difference. She also taught me to always dress according to your body type and to wear outfits that complement your figure.—Happy Andrada-Gras, with mommy Win

When designing for my mom, I always consider age-appropriate colors and a flattering silhouette—but the truth is, she’s usually the one calling the shots. I let her take the lead, then gently blend in touches of my own style. It’s my way of giving her the full experience I give my clients: a custom piece made just for her. And there’s something deeply beautiful about that—being able to dress the woman who raised me through the craft I chose as my career. It feels like everything coming full circle.—Ehrran Montoya, with mommy Jeanette
