- Senator Raffy Tulfo exposed alleged gender-based discrimination at MLM Foods Inc. during a surprise inspection, citing unequal pay, benefits, and treatment of female workers compared to their male counterparts.
Tulfo, who serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Labor and Employment, said the inspection was conducted during the Senate recess after receiving complaints from workers.
This is one of the companies I conducted a random inspection on while the Senate was in recess, based on a complaint brought to me by the workers there)," Tulfo said.
The senator focused on the bakery section of the company, where he observed stark differences in the treatment of male and female workers.
When I got to the bakery section of the company, that’s where I personally confirmed the blatant oppression of their female employees),” he noted.
The male workers are treated well and receive proper wages and benefits, while the female workers are paid by quota and have to work up to thirteen hours just to earn the minimum wage each day)," he added.
Tulfo further revealed that while male workers are provided uniforms free of charge, women employees are required to pay for theirs. Additionally, he said female workers do not receive holiday pay—unlike their male counterparts.
It is clear that this is a blatant case of discrimination against the female workers in the said company," Tulfo stressed.
Under Article 133 of the Philippine Labor Code, it is unlawful for any employer to discriminate against women in terms of employment conditions solely on the basis of sex. This includes differences in pay and benefits for work of equal value.
Tulfo announced that a consultative meeting will be held on May 13 to address this and other labor issues uncovered during his series of random company inspections.
