'Dangerous' heat index forecast persists in 29 areas on May 9
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that 29 areas across the country may experience heat index levels classified under the “danger” category on Friday, May 9.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, 11 areas may record the highest heat index of 43°C. They are Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Aparri, Cagayan; Iba, Zambales; Cavite City, Cavite; Cuyo, Palawan; Daet, Camarines Norte; Legazpi City, Albay; Masbate City, Masbate; Roxas City, Capiz; Catarman, Northern Samar; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
Eighteen other areas may feel a heat index of 42°C: They are Pasay City, Metro Manila; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Echague, Isabela; Olongapo City, Zambales; Camiling, Tarlac; Infanta, Quezon; Coron, Palawan; Virac, Catanduanes; Juban, Sorsogon; Pili, Camarines Sur; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Panglao, Bohol; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Maasin, Southern Leyte; Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur; and Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
PAGASA considers a heat index between 42°C and 51°C at the “danger level.”
It warned that such conditions increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps and exhaustion.
Prolonged exposure may also lead to heatstroke.
