Grandmaster Daniel Quizon and Woman GM Janelle Mae Frayna spearhead a crack Philippine team eyeing FIDE World Cup slots as they see action in the Asian Individual Open and Women’s Championships that unfurled Wednesday, May 7, in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.
Quizon was to compete in the Open section alongside International Masters Pau Bersamina and Jem Garcia in a 150-player field where the Top 10 earn tickets to the biennial event set Oct. 31 to Nov. 27 in New Delhi, India this year.
WIMs Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Bernadette Galas and Marie Antoinette San Diego, was to compete with Frayna in the 105-woman field where the top two will advance to New Delhi.
“It’s a very tough field with India, China and even Russia in the list. But we’ll do our very best,” said Frayna, who thanked the Philippine Sports Commission for bankrolling their participation in the 10-day event.
Frayna came up short in the Zonal Championships a week ago in Mongolia after finishing fifth.
Same with Bersamina, who had an identical fifth-place finish in the men’s side and missed out on the two World Cup tickets at stake in his division.
Quizon and Ruelle Canino also participated but fared lower than Bersamina and Frayna.
Already tough with regional superpowers India and China in it, the field was made tougher after the Russians decided to switch from the European Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation.
There will be 19 Russians in the open section and 13 in the women’s class including its top three seeds Leya Garifullina, Velentina Gunina and Olga Girya.
