PAGASA: 16 areas may reach 'danger' level heat index on May 8
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has identified 16 areas across the country that may experience heat index levels classified under the “danger” category on Thursday, May 8.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, the highest heat index of 44°C may be recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan and Cavite City, Cavite.
A heat index of 43°C may be experienced in Pasay City, Metro Manila; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Echague, Isabela; Iba, Zambales; Camiling, Tarlac; Masbate City, Masbate, and Catarman, Northern Samar.
Other areas may register a 42°C heat index: Tanauan, Batangas; Los Baños, Laguna; Coron, Palawan; Cuyo, Palawan; Daet, Camarines Norte; and Roxas City, Capiz.
PAGASA classifies a heat index of 42°C to 51°C as within the danger level.
It warned that such conditions increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps and heat exhaustion.
Prolonged exposure may also lead to heatstroke.
The highest heat index recorded on May 7 was 46°C in Cavite City.
